Boris Johnson plans to 'legally prohibit' government from extending Brexit transition
Boris Johnson is adding a cut-off date to his Brexit legislation in an apparent attempt to prevent parliament from extending the transition period beyond the end of next year.
The prime minister has "beefed up" his EU divorce deal bill to remove the clause that lets the Commons decide if phase two of talks should be continued to avoid a no-deal at the end of 2020.
The bill will return to the Commons on Friday, in a move Downing Street hopes will ensure Brexit happens on 31 January and the transition period runs until the end of 2020 at the latest while both sides try to strike a trade deal.
