Lucky you, BiSa, and and greetings! You're going to Ann Arbor! Cool!

I visited a visiting history professor there once ... decades ago, and it was in the middle of winter, so my memories of the place, both the town and the campus, are quite faded.

The reason I'm jumping on this thread is that I also live in a famous university town; in our struggles over incessant and overwhelming expansion of the Cal campus, we occasionally hear about how "Ann Arbor" handles things.

Most of what you show us here is classic European oldie style architecture, easily lovable and embraceable by all and made even more cozy and seductive by that vine. I detect no outright horrors at any rate, although I'm sure there must be a bunch of modern buildings on that campus--I do spot at least one-- (unless they have a VERY strong architecture review committe ). And of course you can always send that vine off to camouflage, mellow and soften the horror effect of all sorts of terrible buildings!

Although I have been part of this and other forums for years, I have nothing to show of Berkeley, neither town nor gown, although my permanent resolve is to do better. Our campus, I gather, is much younger than that of Ann Arbor: we started out in the latter part of the 1800s, and at least through the 1920s there was a coherent architectural plan, one laid out and built by our greatest local architects, several of whom studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris: John Galen Howard, Bernard Maybeck, and Julia Morgan. :*****:

PROBLEM: the University has been nibbling and chewing at Berkeley and taken huge chunks out of it since early on in its history. As the university grew, the town shrank, and that process continues to this day and beyond.

For instance, I can imagine a similar scenario for that handsome Sigma Theta Epsilon fraternity house you're showing and one of the many frat houses here. I'm sure that villa used to be a private residence. One day the owners got enough of the increasingly dense and noisy surroundings creeping University expansion brought upon them and sold the place, which immediately or after some time of hiatus ended up in the hands of the fraternity (remember, all those STE or Alpha Beta Kappa or whatever boys who graduated long ago are only too happy to contribute to their alma mater for a tax break! So some generations of STE boys spend many happy, sloppy, beer guzzling years in that grand place until one day the mighty University would set its eyes on it, buy it & send the fraternity elsewhere without really providing for them, move in some office function for a while, let the place fall into disrepair, and ultimately tear it down for some fancy successor project (business school - law school encounter space or sthg ).

I've seen many handsome buildings suffer that fate here, and several more are doomed to destruction in the wake of further University expansion. Did/does this happen in Ann Arbor as well? At what pace is the city being driven out of its historic realm? And does it even have room to move and shift? Berkeley doesn't.

I like Ann Arbor Downtown too. There are museums, galleries, unique and wonderful shops and restaurants, cool funky coffee shops, and a host of interesting things to do - no matter what time of year.

Too bad you can't answer my questions, BiSa but thank you for your positive attitude!

At this point my chances of visiting Ann Arbor are nil while a visit to Lithuanian looks a whole lot better!

@DeSadas: you are also contemplating a time away from home to study in the UK? But only as long as you make it a point to return to your home county.

It is very difficult to say what I will do after my PhD, the specialisation is quite rare and I do not know what I will do with that in Lithuania.
