Fire escapes are nothing to lend beauty to a building. Yet they are required in many parts of the US in order to give people a way out of their apartments in case of fire.

Did any of you see the movie Rear Window by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Steward and Grace Kelly? It's a very old movie and a very fine one indeed . Lots of fire escapes to be seen from that rear window! We had such a metal staircase on our 6th floor apartment in Manhattan, too.
